The Ionian Sea is situated along the west coast of Greece from Corfu via
Lefkas till Kythira.
Next to
the seven big Ionian islands Corfu, Paxos, Lefkas, Ithaca, Cephalonia
and Zakynthos there are a lot of little islands with picturesque
villages, fishermens’ harbours, wonderful beaches and bays as well as a
number of uninhabited islands as the Dragoneras group off shore Astakos.
You can
experience an unparalleled combination of sea and sun, dream islands and
a charming coast area, antique and mediaeval monuments.
There
is nearly no point in the Ionian Sea which is farer than 30 sm from a
shielded harbour. It is the area with ideal weather conditions for a
recreative family sailing trip. In the summer time there is normally
“Maistro”, a nice-weather-wind from north-west, aligned with solid
high-pressure weather. It appears on late morning, doesn’t get stronger
than 5 Beaufort and doze off with sunset. Unlike the “Meltemi” of the
Aegean Sea the weather conditions in the Ionian Sea don’t cause
agitation. The Ionian Islands are situated parallel to the continental
coast and provide good cover leeward when the weather is uneasily –
ideal for recreative sailing under the sun of Homer and the tracks of
Odysseus.
